Tuna USM
Tuna USM is the recasting of what was the traditional tuna, created under the direction of Mrs Ana Hicks, today as removed from the University, but that hopes to continue this beautiful tradition that was missing from this House of studies.

Now under the eaves of the direction of Cultural diffusion of the USM, prickly pear is funded by the Fund of the music of the National Council for culture and the arts, online activities Presenciales and under the patronage of the municipalities of Viña del Mar and Valparaiso, and the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Valparaiso and the Universidad Tecnica Federico Santa Maria.

It should be noted also, that tuna is the oldest university tradition that have record. Its beginnings date back to the 13th century, when the first Studium Generale was founded in Spain, which later formed what is now known as University and in where students with less income came out with their instruments to sing to the taverns and inns to get food, and sometimes a few coins to finance their studies.

Food in these inns was a soup, mix of leftovers of what in those establishments served travelers. This soup was called “sopa boba” and those who consume this food were referred to as “sopistas”. These “sopistas” are the predecessors of what is today known as tuna.

Around 1500 were established in the universities student housing, establishing the “Bachelors of pupils”, that would give shape to the first university faculties. There, former students welcomed to new studies of various subjects and, in addition, in the art of the tuna, which was finally this traditional brotherhood that has kept from generation to generation.

Music was also a way to be able to seduce maidens. At nightfall, the tuna was visiting or “haunted” to their alleged singing verses of love by balconies and Windows, hoping to reach with their melodies to the heart of women. Them, to accept who was around them, threw you the tapes of his hair which the prickly, proud, exhibited in its layers.
